Nothing To Hide
May 19th, 2009
Air New Zealand’s new advert brazenly claiming that its fares have “nothing to hide” certainly is an eye-catcher - in part down to the artwork that had been painstakingly applied to various members of its staff and also because the carrier may also have the innovative edge on its other full-service rivals.
See the making of the video below:
Back in mid-2004 when the airline decided to drop First Class seating in favour of a renewed focus on business and premium economy seating, what many didn’t realise is that this could well be a benchmark for other airlines to emulate - particularly as premium traffic plunges across many other intercontinental carriers.
Whether it catches on is questionable, however, Air New Zealand has coped very well without it and like other airlines is adjusting to a fall of in demand on some of its most profitable routes - it may even push some airlines to consider route-centric seating with and without high yield seating until a meaningful and sustained rebound in global traffic occurs.
Of course in the short term such seating adjustments, cabin refurbishment etc could be regarded as an unnecessary financial outlay, but with the credit crunch pinching wallets and purses for every traveller (biz or leisure), Air New Zealand’s nothing to hide approach about it’s competitive pricing likely means we’ll see other airlines battling it out on price (if not artwork or clothing!) to lure customers back onto their airplanes.
For consumers, thats certainly a good thing.

Amazing to see Rob Fyfe, the Airlines CEO actually getting his gear off as well and particpating in the advert as a baggage loader.
Now, that’s leadership.

Now that is a unique method of marketing in these new economic times. I wonder if AA or DL will follow ’suit’?

Based on what I’ve seen of some airline management, I’m not sure I *WANT* to see them in adverts like this!

Innovative, specially the lesbian woman around 0:30.
I think the SQ commercial is so nineties.

You might enjoy our new domestic safety video that we filmed a couple fo weeks ago and launched onboard our 737 domestic flights today. Five courageous Air New Zealand staff telling our in-flight safety message wearing nothing but body paint. Hopefully this will capture the attention of even our most frequent flyers.
