Small, Big Deals

May 20th, 2008

The first of the small, yet big deals relates to the 747-8 Intercontinental.

Already written off by most, my colleague Michelle Dunlop filed this story on a tentative deal with African carrier, Arik Air, who intend to purchase three of the above named model.

Arik Air also operates and has orders for 737’s, 777’s and 787’s.

Only last week it was revealed here that Etihad is also poised to sign up for the 747-8I, finally, it seems that the fortunes for Boeing’s biggest airplane may just have turned the corner, despite largely missing out on three previous sales years sporting quadruple figure orders.

Secondly, the first 787 Dreamliner races toward the June 2008 target of power on.

Having been delayed for a third time in early April 2008, being able to complete all systems and fire them up, the 787 team will not only be able to breathe a huge sign of relief, but can start to focus on restoring some normalcy to its intended production schedule which has invariably led to customers having to wait longer for their airplanes to arrive.

It would certainly be nice to see some new airline customers for the 747-8I.

As to the 787, while LN001 has been a basket-case, it’s good to see Boeing continue to move forward on her. And it’s even better to see that her sisters are arriving more and more complete, reducing the amount of time each of them needs to be “in the chute”.

Hopefully by the time LN001 is ready to roll, LN002, LN003 and LN004 will be right behind her.
