Keesje:

Lufthansa also display that the A380-800's fuel burn is 3,3litres/pax/100km, but in fact Airbus display the A380's fuel burn as around 2,9litres/pax/100km. Looks like Lufthansa also see the used (Airbus) numbers differently as well!! :) Boeing's highly-efficient and well-optimised 747-8I, has a displayed fuel burn of between 2,6litres/pax/100km - 2,8litres/pax/100km. In these terms, when both Airbus and Boeing work on their internal numbers, through their own tri-class seating arrangement rules, mission rules and other data (i.e. engine), the 747-8I, seating 467 passengers in a Boeing ruled tri-class arrangement is 11% more fuel efficient than an A380 seating 525 passengers in an Airbus ruled tri-class arrangement.

Indeed, I agree with Lufthansa's figures somewhat, as their -8Is will seat in the lower "400seat spectrum", but don't treat those figures Keesje as holly grail.

Both the 747-8 and A380 are fantastic airplanes, and both have stellar economics. Sometimes the scale tips in favour of the 747-8 and others in favour of the A380.

That's the truth my friend. Don't write the -8 off either...the sunrise is approaching with orders...

There is one airline that could be objective, they bought both the Boeing 747-8i and A380-800.

They see it different as the used (Boeing) numbers.

I think the 747-8I would be a nice, niche fit with Emirates. I also believe that there will be a nice second hand market for the 747-8I a la the 747-400 BCF.

If EK doesn't order the B748I be Farnborough Air Show, I won't expect them to order it at all.

Right now, I'll give it 30:70 yay:nay.

Of course, with EK, we never really know anything until a press release.

I remain thoroughly unconvinced that EK will order the 747-8I.

If the seat mile cost data that you quote in the article is correct, BA has some explaining to do!

I think you raise some excellent points WRT the 748I being a good fit for Emirates given the superior cargo capability. EK can focus its A380s on destroying the yields of the likes of QF, AF, BA, LH, and SQ.

Emirates stands for a crystal bal of mythology. Many had expected the A350 order last year, despite the airline singing praises of the 787.

Yes there is room for the 747, quite why they haven't yet addressed it is beyond me - unless some of the intended A380-800 jets will seat less than 467 passengrs?
