Tinseth At The JPMorgan Aviation Conference

March 18th, 2008

Boeing’s VP, Marketing, Randy Tinseth was at the JPMorgan Aviation and Transportation conference being held at The Waldorf Astoria in New York.

Over the past few weeks, much of the talk has been about the loss of the US Air Force tanker deal to the Northrop Grumman/EADS KC-45A and of the 787 Dreamliner, whose power on deadline looms prior to its maiden flight.

Given the plethora of other airline executives at this conference, Tinseth discussed a variety of points regarding the industry at large and that of the Boeing product portfolio.

Below is a brief summary of the points he addressed in his presentation:

On the 787’s success so far – four key points:

Other notes:

  • Demand for 747-8 Intercontinental “will increase”
  • Sees greater convergence of Airbus & Boeing long term growth outlooks
  • 737RS – technology “not there today to make that leap
  • Envisage preliminary launch in 2012 for EIS in 2015
  • 777RS – Boeing will “wait, watch & see” how the Airbus A350XWB family shapes up before determining how to address – “we have time”
  • Encouraged by model/region mix of current airplane orders
  • Most orders have been for replacement of today’s fleet
  • Middle East orders “will happen”, airlines “will take delivery”
  • Middle Eastern airlines vying for market share from Europe, Asia
  • Threat from Bombardier C-Series – “we will defend our territory”
  • 767 has backlog of about 4 years, production will continue while demand is there

Bull on the Boeing bullhorn comment…where is the love for a good blow-by-blow account?

Nice concise summary. Surprising that the questions after the presentation were timed so short.

Udvar-Hazy opined that first 787 deliveries won’t be made until Sep 09 and that “power on” would not occur until June 08.
