Although at first glance the loss of the Tanker contract would have appeared to be a major setback for Boeing, and it will hurt them slightly, the overall picture is better.

The production bay for the 767 sits adjacent to the 787 bay and would lend itself to a quick ramp up for production of 787's which they sorely need. A quick build out of the remaining 767 orders would free up that space.

There are some huge orders sitting on back burners that will no doubt include 787's and time waits for no plane.

Well I´m really curious to see hwo the 787 has progressed. Apparently Boeing is keeping the door tightly closed. They know everything that comes out is put under the microsscope and the stock follows the internet analyses rather the Boeing´s official comments.

The A350 is a challenge indeed, but thats why Airbus takes such a long time to develop it.

"Merrill Lynch has been yet more conservative and expects first deliveries to commence in the fourth quarter of 2009 - slashing the lead time over the rival Airbus A350 down to just over three years."

Of course this is only if Airbus are on time with their new model as well. Past history with the 380 as well as Boeing-like challenges of a new way of Aircraft building, lends skepticism to the chance of Airbus meeting their time lines as well.

As the program is pushed back farther and farther, that just gives the suppliers more and more time to meet the original production goals.

So if Boeing only delivers 30 planes in 2009, that's no real issue if they can deliver 120 or 180 in 2010 because they are now capable of feeding 40-26 with parts to support a 10 to 15 per month delivery rate going forward.

I think after the first delay airlines and lessors would be braced for further delays.

Crucially, if only 30 deliveries are indeed planned for '09, it points to little desire to increase production anytime soon.
